Peter is widely respected for his commitment to clinical excellence, patient-centred care, and innovation across both the public and private healthcare sectors. In addition to his clinical practice, he is dedicated to education and mentorship, helping to develop the next generation of urology specialists throughout Australasia.
His contributions to the field of urology have earned international recognition, including being ranked sixth globally by Expertscape for his expertise in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Peter has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific publications and serves on the editorial boards of six leading international urology journals.
Throughout his distinguished career, Peter has received numerous honours, including the SIU Distinguished Career Award, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Surgical Research Award and in 2025 he was awarded the prestigious Colin McRae Medal for excellence in surgery and outstanding leadership in Aotearoa New Zealand. He introduced robotic-assisted prostate surgery to New Zealand in 2007 and, together with Mark Fraundorfer, pioneered Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), a procedure now performed worldwide.
As one of New Zealand’s early leaders in minimally invasive and keyhole urological surgery, Peter remains committed to advancing treatment options and improving outcomes for patients through innovation, research, and excellence in care.

Virtuoso was opened in 2014 by Peter Gilling and Mark Fraundorfer as a facility for next generation medical treatment and state of the art procedures.

A Legacy Of Firsts
Peter Gilling and Mark Fraundorfer are committed to providing exceptional urological care while continually advancing the treatments available to their patients. Their expertise spans the full range of urological conditions, with particular experience in the management of prostate and kidney diseases.
Peter was the first surgeon in New Zealand to offer robotic-assisted surgery for prostate and kidney cancer, helping bring leading-edge technology to local patients. Together, Peter and Mark also introduced brachytherapy and cryotherapy as treatment options for selected patients with prostate and kidney cancer in New Zealand.
Internationally recognised for their innovation, Peter and Mark co-developed the pioneering HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) technique for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Today, this minimally invasive procedure is performed by urologists around the world and has improved outcomes for countless patients.

Advanced Tools Of The Trade – The Da Vinci Robot
In 2013, Peter Gilling secured funding for a new Da Vinci robot, ensuring the Bay of Plenty could continue offering the latest robotic surgery. Without the upgrade, patients would have lost access to the latest technology for these minimally invasive procedures.
Robotic-assisted surgery uses robotic arms with very precise instruments, controlled by the surgeon. This allows for greater accuracy, smaller incisions, and a faster, more comfortable recovery.
